What is the best weapon to keep by your bed at night in case someone breaks in? Anything besides a gun. Plus, any good alternatives to a knife?

I have a pit bull that sleeps right next to me in my bed. She wouldn't bite anybody that broke in, but the average Joe doesn't know that.

But a weapon? Any weapon is only as effective as the person wielding it. A knife would be fine, but do you know how to use it? Do you know how to keep someone from taking it away? Most importantly, do you really have the ability to use it without hesitation? Whether it is a gun, a knife, or a bat that you choose to sleep with, you had better know the answer to those questions.

Anyway, to answer the question, I would suggest a knife, with a dagger type blade, sharpened on both edges. The problem with swords or bats is that you need room to use them, and you really couldn't get much power in a swing while you are laying down. You may not have a chance to get to your feet before you have to deal with your attacker.

Whatever weapon you choose, I suggest that you take classes on how to use it effectively. Even using a knife in defence is not as simple as stabbing. If you want to stop someone before they have a chance to hurt you, you need to know where to stab them, and how, to create the worst injury possible and end the encounter as soon as you can.

Depends on your training and willingness to use the weapon. Then look at your surroundings. A bat in a small bedroom won't do much good if you don't have room to swing it, a taser requires you get close to the intruder. Nothing is the "best" weapon.

If you are not trained and don't want to spend the time to become competent and dangerous (if you aren't dangerous whats the point) with a particular weapon I would recommend a large dog. The dog doesn't even have to be trained to attack, most people will avoid a home with a large dog.

I prefer a gun myself but have taken lots of training and visit the range every week. I also have a large dog but she would beg the intruder to rub her belly, not protect me.

I don't understand you aversion to a firearm. According to the FBI, resisting an attack by ANY method other than a firearm is the best way to get hurt.

However that being said, a 48" staff about 2" in diameter with some instruction on how to use it. You should also have an alarm system and or a dog, and put in a steel door and frame on you bedroom and a deadbolt. It won't stop someone determined but it may allow you to cower in you bedroom until the casual home invader has grabbed all of your stuff he wants and leaves.

I would suggest something on the order of a S&W Model 19 with a four inch barrel. You can shoot cheap .38 Specials through it for practice and load a .38+P for defense. You may even consider some Glaser safety slugs if over penetration is an issue. The .357 DA revolver is among the simplest, safest, most reliable and inexpensive handguns I can think of. I have a S&W Model 28 and am still very happy with it.

A wooden baseball bat with long nails driven into it ,with the heads cut off, leaving pointed ends, like a medieval mace, should make most intruders retreat.
The bat can be sawn off to the desired length.

The best weapon is an alarm system but in Florida the best is an alligator.

i'd say a taser. either the hand-held kind or the dartgun kind. or you could get a couple two foot long sticks and use those. also, a sword might make the dude think twice.
