In the last few months I have started gridding my teeth when I sleep. I was just wondering if any one knows if the sleeping mouth gaurds you can buy in stores really help or not. Or is there another way to make myself quit? It doesn't bother me so much except my jaw is sore when I wake up but it wakes my boyfriend up during the night and I feel bad.

I wear a dental guard at night and I can really tell a difference in my jaw positioning and tooth sensitivity! My first one came from my dentist and cost $600 - after that I just bought the ones from WalMart and fit them myself. It takes a little practice to get them molded right, so don't be afraid to put it back in boiling water a couple of times after the first fitting. Eventually it will become a perfect fit and you'll wake up without the aching jaws!

I wish you well!

Actually my dentist told me to go to the sporting goods store and buy a mouth gaurd there. He said they are cheaper and better then the ones that are made for grinding your teeth. Otherwise you will spend bucks on a custom fit gaurd from the dentist. I bought one from the grocery store in the dental section and it was no good. I kept spitting it out at night. The one at the sporting goods store isn't so bulky in your mouth. Try this method out.

The store bought ones work okay, but they are very hard to get the fit right. Go to the dentist (that specializes in TMJ) and get a mouthguard or a temporary fix you can get from your dentist is called an Aqualizer. Don't let it go to long. I did and now I am in constant pain and wake up with headaches. I am in treatment now to correct all the damage and it is costing me about $5000.

Yes bite guards will help but check with your dentist to see if you need you bite adjusted. You could have something as simple as a filling or crown that is a smidgen off.
