We moved because my husband accepted a job 200 miles away from where we lived. We rented a u-haul but we did not save the receipt. It does appear on our credit card statement though.

You can call the u-haul company and request a duplicate receipt...and if you charged gas or other moving expenses on a card, you can request a duplicate record from your credit card company. Those copies will be accepted.

As long as you have some kind of proof (credit card statement) that the expense was legitimate, - move in connection with job change - the IRS will accept the deduction.

That should suffice. Don't lose that. Also check to see if you have any gas expenses from the move that you paid for via credit card (or have receipts for), you can include those as well as moving expenses.

If you are otherwise able to claim moving expenses, take the deduction and if you would happen to get audited, show them your credit card statememt. They'd probably accept that - after all, you had to get your stuff there SOMEHOW.

Yes. There is no law that says you have to keep receipts... It just helps if you get audited.

This is Sketchy, you can do it, but if you get audited you will have to have some means of proving it!
