To the Jews

The Jews were the first of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Chritianity, Islam) to rule Jeruselum. King Solomon built the First Temple there at around 960 BCE. The Assyrians came and destroyed everything in Jeruselum in 722 BCE. The Jews returned rougly 200 years later and rebuilt the city along with a new Second Temple.
In present day, The Temple Mount, is the location of the former Jewish temples. The Western Wall is a part of the Temple Mount and is what remains of the Second Temple. This part of the Temple Mount is accessible to the Jews and it is the holiest site in Judaism.

To the Christains

Christianity was the second Abrahamic religion to rise in Jerusalem. This is where Jesus of Nazarath came with his followers. Angered by some of the population viewing him as a Messiah (prophet) the Jews appealed to the ruling Romans to have him punished. Jesus was tortured and crucified in Jerusalem.
In present day, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the site where the New Testament of the Bible describes Jesus to be crucified and buried. the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is administered by the Christians. It is the holiest site in Christianity.

To the Muslims

Islam was the last religion to come to Jerusalem. Muhammad was told to make the trip from Mecca (in Mecca, Saudi Arabia) to the Al-Aqsa Mosque (in Jerusalem) in one night. It is considered holy as the Muslims believe that Abraham established it as the second site site to worship and spread monotheism (first being Mecca). The Dome of the Rock is where Muslims believe that Muhammad ascended into heaven to return with his Islamic teachings. It is currently administered by the Muslims.

The problem is that the Temple Mount includes the Jewish and Islamic holy sites, and this creates conflict.

For Muslims Jerusalem is the third holiest city. For Jews it is the MOST holy.

It was the Prophet Mohammed himself who attempted to negate the positive image of the Jew that had been prevalent earlier. According to historian Bernard Lewis, the Prophet Mohammed's original plan had been to induce the Jews to adopt Islam; when Mohammed began his rule at Medina in AD 622 he counted few supporters, so he adopted several Jewish practices-including daily prayer facing toward Jerusalem and the fast of Yom Kippur-in the hope of wooing the Jews. But the Jewish community rejected the Prophet Mohammed's religion, preferring to adhere to its own beliefs, whereupon Mohammed subsequently substituted Mecca for Jerusalem, and dropped many of the Jewish practices.

Because all three religions trace several of their holy men back to that city - Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed all had siginificant activity in that part of the world.

Jews - Jerusalem is the capitol of their promised land.
Chrisitans-It is the capitol of the Jewish promised land (and more importantly) the site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
Muslims- Mohammed was believed to have ascended to heaven from Jerusalem and received instruction before returning to earth.

Jewish - because it is (and was) the capital and was (and will be) the religious center.

Muslims - Muhammad was to have ascended to Heaven from there to learn from God, and returned there.

Christians - our religion is based on Judaism, and Jesus the Lord and Savior of all, will return and rule from there.

Jerusalem (and the whole Middle East) sits on a faultline that causes it to experience geomagnetic phenomena that affect the human brain causing people like Moses, Paul and Mohammad to hallucinate and see visions of god that their brain generates like dreams.

Primarily because Jesus Christ was born there. All three religions have close ties to the life of Jesus, and each feels that if they control the area he was from that they will be in control over the others.
