Also, 80s and earlier compacts are generally smaller than the smallest cars sold in the US today. Late 80s Toyota Corolla FX (or any Corolla) is a good example. Or an old Toyota Tercel.

Now this would really depend on where you live. What American car dealers call sub-compact are called compact in other places on the globe.

Outside North America Fiat has some great small cars, VW Fox have been getting great reviews. Smart cars seem to be liked by their owners.

I've owned a couple of Saturns... very reliable cars. Pretty small. too. Also, I had no problem selling either one of them.
