They try to stay in the nest until they appear grown. Pigeons and many birds leave the nest and may be quite young, but it is impossible to know their age without careful observation..either from capture (you have to have a license to do that..) or behavior. Young birds grow very rapidly and are well fed by their parents so they often leave the nest appearing larger than their parents. There are differences in the skull visible only on close inspection...like humans it is not fully developed in the young. Also watch for birds feeding each other..while mates also do this, the young will often chase their parent and beg relentlessly. Pigeons eat the plentiful trash in the city...so you may not see it as much if they don't have any trouble finding discarded french fries :) Keep an eye out for those baby pigeons.

baby pigeons are duller than the adults when they have fledged. down our town they put up some metal spikes over the shop sides to stop the pigeons nesting on top of them. however last spring i saw 3 nests with chicks behind the spikes and saw them grow really fast in a matter of weeks.
you never see pheasant chicks in the wild though? well i havent!!!

Because they don't leave the nest until maturity. Immature pigeons are know as 'squabs' & before they fully feather out they will actually be heavier than when they leave the nest. Ever heard of 'roast squab under glass'?

They do not leave the nest until they can fly but their behavior shows that they are babies. Still begging for food from parents. You just don't know what to look for. They display all the baby things that all birds do. You just have to watch for the baby body language.

If you looked inside a pigeon's nest you WOULD see them- but they are fully fledged when they leave the nest- not like ducklings.

birds build nests and the parents usually keep their babies in there all the time until the babies can fly. the parents usually are on the move to bring food to the babies and themselves.
