No. Because you can get Legionairres disease. I do believe this is because of the pipes. But for some reason, it is more unsafe to drink water from the hot water pipe.

Tap water is the same hot or cold.
The pipes is what makes the difference. If you have lead in the water, it is because of the pipes. ( not because of the tank) If you have been drinking water up until now, hot water will be fine.If your house has been there for like 10 years, I am sure it is gone by now.

the hot water picks up traces of things in the pipes as it goes thru them-- i would not drink hot tap water, draw it out cold and heat it in the microwave

Um.. It is not dangerous, but I would say that it is better to heat up cold water because hot water gets you all the crap from the pipes and faucet.
