Airlines are just like bus/train lines. They have set schedules. It's probable that the connecting flights arrive into the terminals at the same time, therefor connecting flights would leave at the same time. Depending on popularity of the destination ofcourse, they could fill more than 1 plane.

That's exactly right! If there are domestic connections from the international gateway, the estimated arrival time would be very similar between the different airlines. They are all competing for the business. Also, if a flight is 12 or 14+ hours, it wouldn't really makes sense to bring people into a different country arriving at 2am when the connection doesn't leave until noon. It's just scheduling. Get them in, get them out. How can airlines maximize the flight load..?. be there to deliver the most passengers, be there to pick up the most passengers when they are ready to go home....
