Look for "Print On Demand" printing equipment. That will come with all of the hardware and software that you need. Try this:

If you think that you have gone too far with your dream, then check out http://www.booksjustbooks.com and look at their Color Printing services. Yes, a color trade journal is what you are looking for to print a magazine. (same thing)

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Too many question to answer before you can do this.

How many pages, 4, 8, 128?
How many colors, 1 color black, 2 colors, 4 color process?
How do you want it bound, saddle stitched, hot glue?
How big are the pages? 5.5"x8.5", 8.5"x11"?

For a high quality color (four color process printing) like any magazine you find on the newstand, youll need Quark or InDesign, and Photshop, and Illustrator as well.

If you want to do a little 8 page 1 color booklet that youll hand out to your church group, you can use word or Microsoft Publisher, Excel, Powerpoint.
(For the most part, those Microsoft application are useless for real world print production and design)

For high quality, stick with Quark, and the Adobe Creative Suite for the design and layout work.
But make sure you check with the printer or a sales rep. (Minuteman and Kinkos farm out most of their work to big companies like mine) to make you get as much info. as needed before staring something like this.

you'll want to get familiar with the Adobe suite Page maker, Illustrator etc... for the formatting and page layout - if your going to self print you'll want printing and binding equipment as well or consult with a local press company about what their requirements are - companies like minute man press are easy to work with but because they are self owned you'll want to ask what equipment they are using to print so that you have the best quality possible
