I personally like the story of Job. He is a Faithful man and God and Satan decide to have a bet on whether he is faithful because of happiness or not. God allows Satan to send him though a world of pain and suffering, his family is killed, he looses everything, but remains faithful despite what his friends say.

Most Christians like this story because of the horrendous things that Job is able to go through without loosing his faith.

I take another approach, I believe it shows the true nature of God. A deity who is willing to let terrible things happen to humans, to make a point, or win a bet. No care was given to Job, yes he does eventually get a new family and new wealth. But what about his old family. They were involved personally in the bet, and paid for it with their lives. Kinda crappy if you ask me.

To me, it would be the parable of the Good Samaratan. What it shows is that goodness can come from anyone. Samaratans at the time of Christ were looked down upon by pius Jews, and yet in this story those pius people were too busy with their prayers to help someone in need. The Samaratan was not. He took the Message of God beyond dogma and into action.

I would say Job and the fact that no matter what things can get better if you can endure the test of faith, be humble, and keep going towards that which is good no matter what. A movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, reminded me of this again recently.

David (and Goliath), because David overcame so many obsticales to become a hero to many. Then he sinned and fell away from God but was forgiven and loved by God anyway.

The story I like the most is found in Luke 7:

7:1 After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2 Now a centurion had a servant [1] who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. 3 When the centurion [2] heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, 5 for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue.” 6 And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. 7 Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. 8 For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” 10 And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

I like it because it helps me to remember the value of faith and humility even as worldly events and responsibilities surround me.
