Deceptive advertising would involve outright lies about a product.

Puffery is more about an exagerration of the truth.

They are similar ,but puffery isn't quite as fraudulent!!

The courts have held that advertising claims such as "The Best Widget Ever Made" are advertising "puffery" and are not subject to legal challenges.

However, untrue claims such as "research shows that every person who tries our diet plan will lose 5 pounds in a week" are basically lies, and are subject to legal action.

In essence, "puffery" uses "weasel words" like "Best Ever," "Lowest Prices," and other phrases that are difficult to substantiate. Deceptive advertising simply lies.
