you dont need any additional programs. STart then Run, then type msconfig, click the startup tab and you will see everything running at startup. uncheck the items you dont want.

Eliminate programs that run during startup

Preventing programs from running at startup can be frustrating because there is no single location from which to stop them all. Some programs run because they're in the 'Startup' folder, others because they're attached to logon scripts. Others run due to Registry settings. With a little determination and persistence, you will be able to prevent unnecessary programs from running during startup.

I've found HijackThis, usually used for detecting spyware/adware/malware, to be effective in identifying all the startup items in the registry. Registry items are sensitive information about your computer's config; those changes should be handled carefully.

They can be identied as startup registry setting if the path in HijackThis looks like this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP

Check the box to remove it from startup.

Word of warning, don't change too much else without consulting professionals if you have questions.

hit ctrl + alt + del (keys on your keyboard) then hit task manager. this will tell you all the programs that are running. click on the processes tab and you will see a lot. click on the mem usage column to sort it by mem usage. the ones at the top should be the ones taking up the greatest. you can click on one of those processes and hit end task, but I wouldn't do that for ones you have no idea what they are. you can usually tell whichs ones would be avg and other programs because they will have it in the name or in the description of where it is running from. good luck!

If you are running Windows XP, just press CTRL+Shift+Esc to bring up Task Manager...it will tell you what you have running. As for switching off the programs, you can set that option in the programs themselves.

if you want to stop a process from running when windows boots, use autoruns - similar to the above programme, except you can disable startup applications

If you have XP. Click on 'START', then 'RUN', type in 'msconfig' (without the quotes). This will tell you what is running on your PC on start-up and you can uncheck as necessary.
