I have a male boxer puppy and we are adopting a female 1yr old boxer tomorrow. She is already house trained and I am just wondering will this help the puppy or make him be worse to fight for attention? He is almost house trained I just don't want to mess it up.

As long as they are altered it should be great. If your "adopting" the female will be spayed so that's good but the boys are the ones that mark and its not always just the carpet. Couches beds they can be bad but he is young and should take great to a neuter before hormaones start.

Can he at least afford a check up? Yes, maybe it will be something that requires expensive treatment - but maybe it won't. He owes it to his dog to find out what's wrong. Drinking lots of water makes me immediately think "diabetes," but I'm sure there could be other problems that cause this, too. Eating only once a day is not unusual. The important thing is the quantity that she eats. An adult female Boxer should eat about 2 cups of food a day. Boxers frequently have food allergies, and are prone to Bloat and granulomatus colitis. Other things besides digestive issues can cause a dog to drink a lot and not eat much, though.

This is actually a pretty good time to add in an adult dog. Because the other is a baby still, the adult will not usually be as assertive towards it and will put up with the baby's playing around a lot.

You may have jealousy issues between the two. It will be important to not allow one to push between you when you are petting or working with the other.

The best things you can teach your dogs in order to maintain peace and harmony in your house are these: Sit/stay, and go to your place. This second one requires an identifiable marker for the dog, like a dog bed or a crate. You must teach the dog to go to this spot on cue. That way if you need to be doing something to one dog like trimming nails or grooming, the other one will not be trying to get in the way.

If you have never had a multidog household before, you might want to go to the library or amazon and find a book on being an effective pack leader. I liked "Who moved my bone?" and especially "How to be the leader of the pack...and have your dog love you for it." Lots of good tips there.

And since you'll have one of each sex, remember to get him neutered and her spayed promptly. She can get pregnant now and he can make her pregnant at a younger age than you think.

Good luck with your pack. Boxers are the BEST. (OK. I like Collies the best, ALSO!)

You have to be very careful when you allow them to meet the first time. Do not bring the new dog into the home for the first meeting. Take them to neutral ground and have them meet there. This allows them to worry about each other and not have the male try to protect you on "his" ground. Also take them for a long walk before entering the home so they will be tired and not worry as much about it. You have to pay the most attention to the dominant dog in the house, either the male or new female, whichever portrays dominance. This allows the dogs to know their roles and it reduces fights. Good luck with it.

Dogs are pack animals and enjoy the company of their own species. I've been owned by Boxers for over 40 years and have found they are much happier when they are not "only children." ;)
It may take time for the two to adjust but I bet after 3 days they will be best buddies and inseparable. The one year old will help teach the puppy bite inhibition and proper play. Good luck!

I bet he is going to love having another companion to play with. That's great that you are getting a girl because a boy and a girl fight less because they are not fighting to be the dominant one. I bet that she teaches him a thing or two like becoming house trained and calming down around people. I think it's a GRAND idea! GOOD LUCK!!

I think it's a great idea. He'll have someone to play with and keep him company. If you don't want puppies though, make sure you get them fixed, if their not already. Females can conceive at 6 months old.

Just make sure they have met before you take your new girl home.
