I need two classical pieces for a college audition: one in a language other than English. My classical experience isn't extremely broad, but my musicianship and theory is beyond most students. I am a high tenor, and would like to show off my upper range. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I agree with the person who suggested the book of Italian songs and arias. Italian is a great place to start if you haven't done a lot of foreign language. All of the vowels are pure, as in "ah, eh, ee, oh, and oo." That's pretty easy to remember.

I personally like "Il mio bel foco" as it is called in the Schirmer edition or "Quella Fiamma" as it is called in the new edition (the purple book). It has a high A that you get to hold out for awhile. Lots of fun for a person who likes to show of their high range.

For your English audition piece, may I recommend something by Handel or Purcell. I love listening to guys sing Baroque. My tenors all love "Where E'er You Walk" by Handel.

Best of luck!!

Try the collection of Italian art songs and arias for high voice. You should be able to get it at any music store, or on line. For college auditions, you should always try to find a piece that 1.you are comfortable with vocally, and 2. Is obscure, or at least not widely known or popular. The judges at your audition are more than likely going to be listening to a lot of applicants, and if you come in and sing the 20th Ave Maria of the day, chances are they aren't going to be as engaged or worse, they will begin to compare you to the 19 Ave's before you. There is a great piece called "Pieta Signore" by Allesandro Stradella. I believe it is in the collection I mentioned. It has an amazing range, and would showcase your higher register nicely. Good Luck!!

Absolute best way to start is with the book that almost every beginning classical voice student does- 26 Italian Songs and Arias- what most students call the "26 Italian Hits". Get the higher version.

My personal favourite (I have a light, flexible soprano- heading in that lyric-coloratura direction) of the bunch is "Le Violette" by Scarlatti. Lots of fun ornaments.

It does depend on what you are trying to audtion for. I would recommend an arrangment of Ave Maria that emphasizes your range. Done in Latin it should qualify for language other than English.

I personally love "Ave Maria". I believe it is in Latin and it should really show off your voice. Good Luck!
