Basically, I just purchased Office XP pro and installation progresses normally until the bar reaches about halfway, no errors, no crashing, it just stops.

I have tried uninstalling all other non-essential programs with no result. Any input is greatly appreciated.

update:

Not only is nothing else running, most programs I have have been uninstalled, basically, I stripped the system in my attempt to install office.

Why OXP PRO? I got it though my work at a huge discount: cost $20 for the license as home use software.

Tried installing in safe mode, got following message:

The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

Specs: 1500MHz Proc.
Tons of free space
Unknown ram

I will probably be upgrading ram next week, will that solve the problem?

I'm hearing good ideas, but all of your methods have not produced any results.

Thank you all anyway, but I am calling the microsoft helpline, not that I have any faith in them, but who knows, maybe I'll get bill gates and maybe he'll know wtf is up with this...

I would try cleaning out the temp file folder.
Normally Microsoft Office XP uses a folder for temp storage and if it is too full installation can fail. Mine is C:\Documents and Settings\jerry\Local Settings\Temp (Yours will be with your user name not mine)

To clean the temp folder MIcrosoft XP do this. (Click may be a double click depending how your computer is set up)

1. Click on My computer
2. Click on C drive (or Main hard drive)
3. Click on Documents and Settings
4. Click on the user name the file is being installed under (name chosen when computer starts up or the default use name)
5. Near the top click on Tools > Folder Options
6. Click on the tab labeled View
7. Under Hidden files and folders choose SHOW hidden files and folders.
8. Click OK
9. Hidden files and folders should show up
10. Click on the Local Settings folder
11. Open the Temp folder and delete all the files you can in that folder. (some may be in use and won't delete.)
12. Then try re-installing Office XP

Hope this works. I know of know other reason it won't install unless the CD is scratched, but you will normally get a file could not be installed warning if it is.

Interesting...
... can I just ask why you didn't:
a) buy Office 2003 Pro, which is newer than Office XP Pro?
b) buy for Office 2007 which is in-stores from January 30th?

Anyhoo. I suggest restarting in safe-mode.
Restart the PC, and when the page about your system information appears, press F8. This brings up Windows' Advanced Startup Services. Choose Boot in Safe Mode with Networking [if you need access to a WiFi or wired network whilst in safe-mode] or Boot in Safe Mode with Command Prompt [if you want access to Command Prompt whilst in safe-mode]. If you're not bothered about a network connection or command prompt, just choose the ...with networking option.
Wait until Windows loads and then run installation as normal.
ONCE INSTALLATION IS FINISHED, YOU SHOULD TRY THE PROGRAMS: THEY MAY NOT WORK. IF THEY DO NOT WORK, THEN JUST REBOOT NORMALLY AND WAIT FOR XP TO LOAD.

Good Luck!

Are you speaking of place of work XP or the operating gadget residing house windows XP specialist. you got the names of both yet they're 2 diverse courses. One is an place of work equipment and one is the operating gadget. If it really is the place of work software you're speaking of then no, you ought to purchase one to artwork with Vista. it really is one downside of Vista. All application must have the Vista form with the intention to artwork with Vista. once you're speaking of the OS - verify the specs of the computer you're paying for to confirm if drivers are written for XP.
