My six year old daughter has thick, dark brown hair down the middle of her back. It seems as though her hair is coming out excessively. I know they say we lose a lot of hair everyday anyways but her hair loss seems like too much.

I brush her hair and the brush is just full of her hair. I gave her a bath today and combed in the conditioner and it was just coming out like crazy...and there was a huge amount of hair in the drain when she was done. Does it seem like this is normal or not? I wondered if she is missing something in her nutrition that could cause this kind of hair loss. I was considering cutting some of it off to see if that would help...but it is so pretty long.

It definately seems like more than 100 hairs. She is on a prescription for a mood stabalizer because she was diagnosed with mild autism four years ago. Maybe her meds are causing this. I will talk with the doctor.

a person, healthy, loses about 100 or more hairs a day,,,,,, so not sure how much you are seeing, but especially with long hair, the hairs coming out can get tangled, caught up in, the other hair,,,, so when you brush or shampoo, you notice it more,,,,,,,,,, with that said, its always good to check with a doctor, have routine blood test,,,,, if you think there is a problem,,,,,, low thyroid (rare in children but possible),,,,, diet issues,,,,,,, other illnesses, can cause hair loss,,,,,, also some medications,,,,,,, with meds, the results show up often a few months later,,,,,, so was she ill or took any antibiotics a few months ago?

You lose about 100 hairs a day, so dont worry ifs its that much or a little more.

A good vitamin to take is a multi B.
It makes your hair thicker and grows healthier.

Does she have little bumps on her scalp that are itchy? If so, she may have seboric dermatitis (sp?). It's hereditary, and nothing major. You just have to use a special shampoo every now and then.

I would take her to the doctor to get it looked at just in case. Or a dermatologist. My dermatologist diagnosed mine.
