I have a platinum setting with diamonds on it already. No center stone. It has been worn. I was wondering if it is bad luck to re-use the setting, or actually, how most women would feel if they knew the setting was pre-owned? Would it be better to melt it down and re-create it to look different? Realistically, dimonds are diamonds, and platinum is platinum, right? I was thinking about adding it to something for an engagement ring for my girlfriend... I guess what I am asking is: Would you be offended, or just like the fact that the ring was bigger/had more?

I don't really put to much in the whole good luck/bad luck aspect...but as far as personal feelings on it...

Who wore the ring previously???
I would indeed be offended if this was from a previous relationship.
If it is a family heirloom, I would be honored.
If its from a pawn shop or bought used...I wouldn't want to know! LOL
As far as being "practical", using it as it and adding the center stone WOULD indeed be practical...and with today's economy there's nothing wrong w/practical.
In the end it's all about the meaning behind the ring, not really the size, setting, stone, material. The size and cost of the ring doesnt determine how good the relationship is...and if all she's worried about is the kt weight, then I wouldn't worry about the "offense" angle....
As long as the reasons for why you're giving it are true, then I don't really think much else matters.

Who did the original setting belong to? Family?
A platinum ring with a diamond setting, what woman won't love that? You also going to buy a new diamond for where there is one missing, how fantastic!
Does it look worn? I am sure once you get the new setting put in and the ring polished, no one will be the wiser as to it's origins.
I hope your girlfriend says "yes".

Melt it down and have it re-set. It depends on the girl as well as why the ring was never used, but either way, definitely change it as much as possible for the future use. It just makes sense of a lot of levels...

Good luck with the next proposal!

If it were me, I would want it melted down and reset. I made my husband promise that no other woman would put my ring on her finger besides me. If you melt it down and have it rest - it becomes a new ring.

Honestly though, every woman is different. I wanted a complete surprise. My sister chose everything. My best friend wore her ring home from the jewelery store. Make sure you understand your girlfriend's expectations.

Good Luck and Congratulations!

When you say pre owned, was it prewore by a famliy member, or an ex-financee? If by a family member, or anyone other than an ex, I think it would be fine, as long as she likes it. Suggestion..... why dont you let her pick out the center diamond to go in it, that way she will make it her own.

I think it's practical especially if it's a nice ring, if she loves you she won't care if it was previously owned if you had it melted down and recreated it would mean a whole lot more because of the thought and time you took in getting it recreated! good luck!

I would have no problem wearing a pre-owned ring, unless it was a ring my husband had bought for another girl.
