My cat is a male cat and he jumps up on my bed and kneeds at the comforter. Continues to dig his claws into it and I try to stop him by squeezing his paws a bit or tryin to push his claws back in but he still does it everytime! How can I teach him not to do it? I still would like to cuddle him on my bed but without him ruining it.
We can't declaw him because he's an outdoor cat and we live on a raviene so he needs to defend himself.

I only do this because he is ruining my comforter and pulls up all these little threads in it.

cats have to kneed, it stretches them out. kneeding is a natural part of cat life. when you don't want him kneeding in certain places then spray him with water. i have found that they LOVE floor mats that come out of cars. i have some in my home and they are more attracted to that then anything else. i used to have a problem with them kneeding and scratching at the door panels and i built and easy box and covered in in some speaker box fabric-you can find this at checkers and some fabric stores and what not- that stuff is great because its durable and doesn't Frey that much at all!!! they can stretch and pull at it all they want. i have 6 cats and they all pull and kneed on the same box. i have had the box for over 2 years and have has more cats in and out of my house in those two year and they all use it and i haven't need to replace it at all!!! it doesn't even look bad!! the fabric comes in tons of colors. he needs to have something else to kneed on, you need a distraction. spray kitty when it kneeds on bed and take him/her over to where its OK to do that. good luck

Just accept that is what he does... My male cat loves to kneed on our comforter as well as on me! It feels good to him! If there is a way to do it I know nothing about it since I accept that its in their nature! Dont squeeze his claws or try to push his claws back in please I doubt that will provide an effective result! Definitley dont declaw him (which you already stated isnt an option and Im glad to hear)! Somethings just arent worth stressing over! I sometimes put an old blanket or a robe on the end of the bed and he will go for that especially if it has more fluff and plush factor to it! Maybe its just me but I love watching him kneed... Its so cute!

ok I even have 3 cats ( i did have 5) and that they do the same element. it incredibly is a sturdy element that they kneed u through fact they're showing affection. I continually have my kitty's claws clipped and generally i placed a blanket or towel (ideally an previous one that u do not strategies being torn up) and that i shop it on me so they are able to kneed that.

You don't say how old your cat is but from what you have said, I suspect he's still young. Kittens knead when nursing and often they continue doing it even after they're weaned. He'll grow out of it though. In the meantime, just clip the sharp points of his claws with nail clippers about every ten days and that should prevent any damage to you comforters. Declawing is cruel and unnecessary, so please don't do it. Your cat must be adorable. Get him on video.

I wouldn't recommend declawing even though you say he is an outdoor cat, too.
I have had cats my entire life and have never had one declawed.
The only thing you can do is keep the cat out of your bedroom.
Kneeding is natural for all cats.
Declawing would be like you having all of your fingers cut off at the first knuckle.

You can't, it is part of his natural behavior. Just make sure his nails are trimmed frequently. I have three cats now, one male and two female. They all kneed at times, but I have never had any damage done to my comforters or furniture. Try giving him his own soft blanket and put it where he naps, maybe he will only use this. Good luck.

First of all, you should NEVER declaw your cat, so I'm glad you didn't do that.
Try getting him a scratching box (they sell them at Trader Joes - or pet stores) and sprinkle cat nip on it. He's going to kneed your bed though because its a instinct cats do. I have 2 and thats why I don't have an expensive bedspread.

Hi there, get a crappy blanket and cover your comforter. if you let him knead for a few minutes , he will curl up and stop. You can trim his nails also every other week: but this is natural behavior for a cat, this is how they say they are happy and they love you.... you really should not discourage kneading or treading as they call it. This is how kittens get milk from mommie and they continue this when they are happy.

I don't think you can stop this- it's 'normal' cat behavior and is his way of showing happiness/affection. My suggestion would be either keep him out of the bedroom altogether, or to use a non-expensive comforter. Yay for not declawing! - fellow cat person.

Hi there...consider trimming your cats nails rather so that he still can maintain his claws, but the tips are blunted so they are not nearly as destructive to your comforter.
Here's an instructional video by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine for Feline Health on how to trim cats nails:
