Or "Oh, my God!"

If so, isn't that contradictory?

Sure, but it's not contradictory. When religious people say TGIF, are they expressing a belief in Frige/Frigga/Freja, goddess of beauty, after whom Friday is named? No. These are just common phrases that have become part of the culture. How many Christians knock on wood when they say something they hope won't happen to them?

I will sometimes say 'goddammit', but it's not contradictory because I only believe in deities in a symbolic, metaphorical sense - I don't really believe they actually exist, but I will for example think of symbols of the maiden, the mother, and the crone, and rain gods and sunset gods and what have you. Saying goddammit, I'm not actually praying or addressing anyone.

No.

Not believing in God doesn't mean never saying the word.

It would be more contradictory for a Theist to say those things, since if they beleive in God they should also follow his commandments--one of which is "Thou shalt not take the name of thy lord God in vain".

i also say for "fukcing jesus' sake",
and "god you fukcer, why did you do this to me"
also " if it wasn't for that whore Mary, we'd not be in this mess".

so what's your point??

don't christians use scientific words.
like mountain, fish, hill,
look, if it was up to some people, your lot would have to have their own language, and live on an island far far away,
so just be happy you have freedom!

for god's sake.

and it would only be contradictory if I said "i don't believe in god, oh god, please let my mum win the lottery"

Some of the believer's arguments do make me say "Jesus Christ! " sometimes....just add it to my list of sins that I will have to answer for on Judgment day. I will try not to lose sleep over it.

I use a whole range of expletives using God etc. and you know what significance they have-none. A bit like your question.

i'm no athiest but my friend is...she says "oh my god" and no it's not a contradiction because it's an expression... if i say "jesus christ" and i'm a jew.. i don't contradict myself....same with.."what the hell"..."holy cow"...etc.. they are expressions just like "over my dead body", "holly molly", "godammit", and "all that and a bag of chips"
