From my point of view it's a really useless thing to judge the behaviour of ALL italians, as well as a behaviour of different nationalities. Even if there are (of course there are) common things raised by each country culture, economical situation, etc., however there are always can be found exceptions formed by family values, personal education and individual character treats.
I don't know much italians, but looking at those I know, I may g e n e r a l l y characterise them as: 1) friendly & funny 2) very proud to be italians 3) creative & easy going 4) growing up slowly, get married & having a 1st baby late, typically after 32 yrs old 5) tend to emotional expressions and reaction 6) all in all, they are good as all others :)

Italians are very much family oriented. Most of them love to have a good time with family and friends but they also have a very serious side. They take a good joke, but do not joke about things that are dear to their hearts, their faith, their homes and their families. Italians hold very little prejudice and like everyone. Respect and honor is very important. Just be respectful, friendly, and truthful. Italian will know if you are lying, and will never trust you again. Be clean and dress neatly if you are visiting or staying with an Italian family. Italians hate sloth and uncleanliness. You do not have to be rich, but at least be clean, Shaven, and neat.
Italians love music, fine art, good food, so when you are with an Italian family their love of music, art and good food will definitely come in the conversation. Definitely show respect about their passions. Italians will not try to convert you to their religion or culture, unless you want to, but will definitely make you a part of their world if you show kindness and respect. Just be yourself, and do not put on airs, or be someone that you are not, and you will have your Italians friends forever. Italians love their friends as family and dote on them as family, once they feel the Italian love of life, family and friends in their friends. They will love you as their own and respect for who you are.

Don't listen to this Erlampo, he goes on all the Italy boards and defames us.
Italians are generally nice people, and VERY affectionate. Men kiss each other on the cheeks as a greeting, which can seem odd to an American. It is not uncommon for an Italian to invite you to his/her home and cook for you as if you are a family member. Warm, warm people who love the sun, fashion, living life with as little stress as possible, family, good food, and friendship!!!
Some bad things though: we don't like to wait on lines, some are too old fashioned, and many are stubborn!!

I am unsure a little of your what you are asking. If you are asking how the Italian act in compared to Americans there is a simple answer. They live life! I have spent a great deal of time in Italy and the people are just amazing. Work is not life. They spend a lot of time with friends and family and they do things that make them happy. In america it seems like work controlls a lot of our lives.

Erlampo I disagree with you. I'm Italian and I'm not lazy, I'm not a thief and I'm not rude. And I could say the same things for a lot of italian people. Exceptions are everywhere and in every culture. And, above all, I drive my car very well!

They are extremely uncivil and rude, except when they want something from you (especially if you are an attractive female). They are very lazy and will do anything to avoid work. They drive like complete and utter idiots. They are also extremely dishonest and will steal whatever they can get their hands on.
