Take him to the groomer and have them bathe him with a nice oatmeal skin treatment and see if they have an oatmeal conditioner.

Also the skin problem could be from allergies and clear up with benadryl. you just give your dog one mixed in a treat and make him swallow it.
*my dog had this problem, and that clearred it up!**
Also give your dog FISH OIL, OR OMEGA FATTY ACID vitimans that you buy at vitiman store.

it's just called fish oil pills. ask they know what you mean.
it will add more oil to the diet thru the vitimans w/o making your dog fat, and help it's skin.

just like humans, dogs have dry skin problems, simple vitimans high in vit fish oil clears up dry skin.

OR it's skin allergy. Does he itch and scratch a lot?
my one dog that this happened to was fine and then he was 7 yrs old and got that dry flakey itchy skin, the benadryl over the counter generic cleared it right up.

A good groomer can bathe and condition your dogs skin and hair, and give you reccomendations.

Last resort, or smartest is to go to the VET.

*but is you want to try the other things to save money first.
I know that they worked for my 2nd dog with long hair!!

Brush you dog daily.
I even would put my body oil on his back down the middle to see if it helped! (i don't know if that's a good idea tho!)

go the pet store and get a good conditioning shampoo that is meant for dry skin and start giving him a bath as the directions say. clip nails before doing this though!! just to be safe. also think about changing your food. it may be that he isn't getting enough of the valuable vitamins and nutrient that he need to have a healthy coat. just switch brands of food. Purina is good and so is iambs. just look around, most people at the pet stores can help you and guide you to what you are looking for. good luck.
