I'm trying to take small portions of movies to use as examples in a class I'm teaching, but I don't know how to get the clips off of DVDs. I know how to edit them together in movie maker. I just don't know how to extract the actual movie clips I want to use. Can someone tell me how to do that?

You can use a recorder to capture what is on your screen. There are a few sharewares out there that you can try. WMRecorder is one and it will also record the audio part.

You can rip the DVD, convert it to some format like mpeg or wmv...then use somethign like Windows Movie maker and it will divide up the movie into clips for you to pick and choose. Then you just save it again as an mpeg and you should be good. There's definitely software with way more features, but they are expensive. My way is the quick and dirty...but free!

You need to RIP the DVD. You need 3 programs to do and it's a bit long winded. The programs you need are Smartripper, DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc. All are free from afterdawn.com

Use them in the above order. Their tutorials (and you WILL need them) are also available on the site. TMPGEnc will do the cutting of the movie for you into the segments you want.

As you're a teacher, ask if you're allowed to show this content in school/wherever. The 'school' may have issues with it.
