His work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. established him and a "civil rights leader".
I personally don't like him but not for his political leanings its his personal life that I don't agree with. That withstanding, I do find it hypocrytical that that the very people who are so "pro-life" will not bring those children from adoptive minority groups into their homes.
I think Rev. Jackson does stand up for minorities (sometimes not investigating the issues thoroughly first) and takes stands that put a spotlight on the dissolution of the "American Dream".
But his personal life leaves alot to be desired.
The bigger question would be "How effective is he at this point in his career?"

Hes not about racial intolerence. He was all over NYC when the police shot that groom and was all over tv calling for racial unity blah blah blah, then when it was found out that it was the black cop that shot the suspect the most, he was no where to be found. He only seems to show up when he can benifit from it.
