By my definition, an atheist is a person that does not believe in anything beyond their own consciousness and experience. Not only do they not believe in God, but they also do not believe in the possibility that there may be things we don't know about and may never understand.
An agnostic, by contrast, is NOT looking for the "right god" to follow but does not believe in a supreme deity either. Agnostics also accept the fact that there cannot logically be one correct god and therefore there are none. However, since evolution can be studied and not totally explained, and every single thing in the bible cannot be totally disproven, then there are obviously other things that we will never understand. Therefore, the black & white viewpoint of true atheism is what makes them different from agnostics.
I feel that a lot of self-proclaimed atheists are actually agnostic, but that's not my decision to make.

Perhaps atheism doesn't mean asserting there is no God. Perhaps it is more of an assertion the theistic understanding of God (peddled by many) has become unbelievable to those who believe thinking is allowed (perhaps even required to escape wrath to come, if Paul The Apostle is to be believed) and the mixture of contrary things only makes an oxymoron such as one proselyte: twofold: more the child of hell than former hypocrites.
Personally I have found most so-called atheists are just sick and tired of religious people law imputing condemnation for the "hell" of it; Not to mention many so-called atheists seem to know more about the Bible than many carnal christians do, which denotes many in christendom are by and large christen-dumb, not much different than the martyr-dumb folk they condemn, not knowing any condemnation condemns all of we all are one... one what?
Perhaps we all are one should all think from the end written;
For the beginning of knowledge and wisdom is fear(torment),
and what began such "fear" (hath torment) is notably the law.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Someone who believes that God (or a higher power of any kind) does not exist. When you die, thats it...no heaven or any kind of afterlife at all.
An agnostic is someone that hasnt decided what their beliefs are.
