If so, why don't they just call it a calculator?

Yea, it's a regular calculator, but used mostly for accounting-type purposes, so it doesn't have as many functions as a hand-held. I think that's why it's referred to as a 10-key. You only use the basic functions, which I KNOW is more than just the 10 keys, but hey, that's my answer! :-)

A "10 key calculator" also implies that the keys are laid out the same as the 10 key adding machines (from way back in the day) so that someone who has used one of those can easily start using the calculator. They are like the number pad on your computer keyboard.

Many people can use them like some people type on keyboards -- purely by touch. If they had to search for the various function keys (=, +, -, /, *, etc) like on regular calculators, it would slow them down quite a bit.

A "Ten Key" is generally a table top type of calculator. They are basically the same except in the way you have to operate the keys in order to use them. I haven't used a ten key in years but I do know the function of them is different then a typical calculator. Many people that are proficient n calculators don't like using a Ten Key because the process is different.
