The word mark is used 7 times in Revelations (13:16,17; 14:9,11; 16:2 19:20; 20:2). All are from the Greek word charagma (Strong 5480). Charama literally means carve-effect translated as emblem.

Revelations is a very difficult book to read because of the style and use of language; however, you rarely hear the word carved for spiritual matters and our translation of charagma to mark rather than emblem clouds the meaning. Mark can be hidden, in your case spiritual, but emblem cannot. Moreover emblem can be refer to behavior. for example, red badge of courage does not refer to a red patch physically or spiritually.

As I a said, Revelations is a difficult book to read especially when the Greek words are translated into English loosing shades of meaning.

Answer: I don't know how many people know (incorrectly) that the mark of the Beast is a spiritual mark. Whatever the number will not change it meaning.

If it was a spiritual mark, it wouldn't keep anyone from buying or selling, hence its not spiritual. I think it will be the veri-chip, though it will be a greatly improved version, its the only thing that makes sense. All our banking can be on it, hence the buying and selling part, and its logical to be on the forehead or hand for easy access to scanners. Think about it, if it was on your upper arm or something, and its the dead of winter, do you really want to have to take off your coat in the checkout of the grocery store to get scanned? Of course not, that would be too time consuming, forehead or hand would just be much more convenient.

Let me let Jesus tell you plainly what the mark of the beast is; John 16:2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

Now there is a Mark of God and the Mark of the Beast, having the Holy Spirit is the Mark of God and if you do not have the Holy Spirit you have the mark of the Beast.
Jesus said you must be born again to be saved; John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Here are the people that have the mark of Beast and the Mark of God; Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
If your name is not on the Book of Life you have the mark of the beast and you are going to Lake of Fire.
Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
So in conclusion the Mark is symoblic of your thought (forhead) and your actions (hands or works) and not having anything to do with people outside your religion, meaning you want to kill them and their influence if you are no part of their organized religion.
This is what the Jews did with Jesus to receive the Mark of the Beast, same as Cain and Abel the first man to receive this mark; Genesis 4:15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
