If you can file with the 1040 EZ then just both of you fill out the form and see what you will get back seperately. Otherwise check out the IRS website and it will tell you. Hope this helps.

Usually "married filing separate" does not have the best benefits, but if only 1 of you had high medical bills then it might help. You can read about it at the irs site online.

If you get almost nothing when you file together (joint return), then you'll most likely get nothing at all, or owe, if you file as married filing separately, your only other option.

WARNING: In most cases, married people who file their income taxes separately get even less than if they would have filed jointly (and in many cases end up owing money). If you own/mortgage a house, you can write off your property taxes AND the interest you paid on the mortgage for the last year. You can also write off contributions to churches and charitable organizations, and you can even write off your vehicle registration. If none of this applies to you, check your W-4's. My wife and I both claim zero dependents, so they take out more tax from our pay checks but we usually get back at least $3,000.00 every year from Uncle Sam. If you claim one or more dependents on your W-4's they take out less taxes from each pay check but you get less money back at the end of the year. If you want to get the most money back out of your taxes, it's probably worth it to have H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt prepare your taxes for you. Just don't fall for the "instant return" hook -- they charge you an arm and a leg for it, and you're really better off E-filing your taxes because you'll usually get the money direct deposited to your bank account within 10-14 days.

Probably worse if file seperately. Probably just means you did your W-4s right. Most foolishly overwithold. That's why they get big refunds. They made a stupid interest free loan.
