Hi Sweetpea.
I think this is a great question because it opens up the whole area of presents and cash.
Advertising pressure and peer pressure are the reasons everyone is trying to match if not outdo everyone else.
Its also the reason for there being so much personal debt and resulting misery.
Girls or guys should buy what they can comfortably afford and for heavens sake-cliche or not..it's the thought that counts

In my personal experiance, I get my husband very expensive gifts for day like that. If he matched me every time we would be broke. I am more of a giver than a receiver, though I would be happy to get such gifts, but I do not expect them. I am more excited to see the look on his face when I give hime something that he has wanted for what seems like forever and never expecting it on that day. Sometimes I give it a little early just to surprise him. But some people like to give limits, like you spend 50 I'll spend 50 that way they know they wont out do eachother. But like the other readers said, it should not be a competition. Get something that you feel they will love and dont think about what they are getting you. It all comes from the heart. Goodluck !

Depends on who makes the most money!!!!
If your guy makes 4x's what you make, you cannot afford to match it $ for $$$$$!!!
My husband, all I ask for for Valentine's day is Tulips.
It's the only time of the year they have them, and I like them in a Pot so I can replant them.
All I get him is a card.
He gets my 2 lips in exchange!
It's not about gifts, it's about LOVE and the time and valuable quality you have with one another.
Valentines day is a messed up holiday to confuse people into buying things, and make people feel bad if they don't get something, and make single women miserable all over the world, if they don't have a guy!!!!
Go buy yourself something nice and get him a card!!!
if you can't guy yourself a nice gift, then you can't afford to buy him one either!!
NO you don't have to match the $$$$$$$$$$$$
IT'S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS!

Hell, I wouldn't want my girl to spend a single penny on me. Just a simple "I love You" would suffice. If she makes me something, I'd treasure it till the end of the world. If she bought me something, I'd probably just use it whenever I feel like it.
