If you're using this computer as practice or just to play around then upgrade your memory - Flash your Bios - overclock your cpu - add a new hard drive. Don't bother going with XP, but rather go with Win2000. XP takes too much resources and your P2 won't run efficiently. Nowadays you're better off with a new pc.

If you want to update the processor you need to find a mother board that will support it. With a pentium 2 if you can put pentium III on it then it is worth upgrading but other than that you are best off just building or getting a new computer.

OK you need a catalog or a store that sells parts, you need a new motherboard that will support a P4 or an Athelon processor, do not accept anything under 2.0 gigahertz, add at least 1 gigabyte of RAM (preferably 2), then later you can save up and get a new monitor and video card, you will need larger disk drives in the future (not IDE anymore, get SATA). The store can tell you what all of this means or ask another question and we Will explain, basically you have a 1996 computer WWAAYY out of date!

Add more memory... Windows Xp is a memory hog in comparison to the Win 98SE you probably had on it. (128MB is recommended). As for updating your desktop for Pentium 2, since you already have a Pentium 2, I would suggest you look up your motherboard from the manufacturer to see what the fastest CPU compatible with your board is and buy one or you can just upgrade your motherboard , get a faster CPU (say PIII or AMD K6) maybe new memory. Jjust depends on how much you want to invest in your computer.
System requirements per microsoft:

There's not a chance in the world you can update anything on a Pentium 2 machine that's worth doing.
Either deal with what you've got, or you need a new machine.
Sorry.

If you go to a store like Microcenter or CompUSA, they should be able to show you how to buy the components you need. However, it sounds like you're so out of date that its going to be a lot more cost effective to just buy a new machine. Not only that, but there is no gaurentee that your old machine is even upgradable.
I mean, if you outlay just 200 or 300 bucks (a paltry sum by PC standards), you'll be able to pick up a machine thats dozens of times faster than yours... If worst comes to worst, buy a new machine thats stripped down but upgradable, and then pay as you go.

unfortunately, your motherboard will not support a newer processer, and your power supply is probably also insufficient, also a board that will support a newer processoe will most likely not support your memory You're better off with a new computer.
