The baby was born in July 2006, but I still haven't received a social security number. The tax forms ask for SSNs for dependents, so can I still claim the baby? Or do I have to wait until I get a SSN to file?

For any child under a year old, you may place 'applied for' in the space for the child's social security number. You should not file electronically, as the IRS will reject the return, as those returns may only be paper filed. Next year, you will not be able to claim the child without a social security number. Also, check with the hospital where you delivered. Some hospitals have begun to do the SSN filing for you as a service.

The Social secuirty number list has already been provided to the IRS for this tax filing season, so applying for a new SSN now would not permit you to electronically file.

You must have a SSN to claim your child. Contact your local SS office and ask them to get you a number so you can file your income taxes. You may have to ask the IRS for an extention of time to file. A very simple action. All you do is get the proper form (on line) and mail it in. However there will be a penalty if you owe more taxes.

Go to your local Social Security office and apply. That day they can give you a print out of the number while awaiting the real card in the mail. Take the print-out to the tax office or use the number on the notice. It still may take a few weeks for SS to catch up with IRS records. If you are planning on filing electronically it will probably be a couple week wait. If you mail your return this should do it for you.

good luck & blessing

You can not claim the child with out the Social Security number
When did you apply for the childs number? If you applied for it, take the birth certificate to your locSSA office and they can provide it to you. If you haven't applied yet you can access the forms here http://www.ssa.gov/ they need to be mailed in, allow approximately 3 to 4 weeks for processing and the card to be mailed to you

You can write "applied for" in the space provided. Be sure that you have in fact applied for it, it's not automatic.
