I hate to break this to you but your teeth are really going to hurt for the first after actually getting the braces. There isn't much you can do. So, continue to take pain medicine (but not too much!), rest, and try not to think about it. And don't worry, the pain will go away within the next few days.

Your teeth are just sensitive right now. Give it time. I got braces when I was 13 (I'm 20 now) and my mouth hurt for about a week after I got them. The point of braces is to move your teeth to a straightened state, it's going to hurt to have them move. You'll feel the same thing later on when you get them tightened. However, if the pain is completely unbearable or it doesn't go away within a couple of weeks, call your orthodontist and ask what can be done or to come in for an appointment.

You may be over doing it with chewing. Stick to REALLY soft foods, oatmeal, yogurt, scrambled eggs, pasta, baked potatoes or mashed....things you can just about swallow without putting your teeth together. The biggest, and I mean the biggest things you can eat to help with the pain are cold foods, like ice cream, smoothies, Popsicles and then more ice cream. If you back off on the chewing or trying to chew foods, and move to the other end of the spectrum with cold foods and soft foods, you will see a big improvement and an immediate reduction in pain. Keep taking the Advil or Motrin as it's an anti inflammatory and really does help. These are the things I tell all of our Ortho patients, and they tell me that this advise works for them every time. I should know because I've been there myself. Good luck and it will get easier. Just remember when you have your monthly adjustments, go back to the soft cold foods for a day or two then slowly add the harder food, but cut them up into bite size pieces. Hope I've been of some help.

When I had my braces the first week or so it hurt really bad too. I took Tylenol (sp?)
It worked only a bit, but later on my mouth wasn't as sore because my teeth were settling down then.
It takes a while for the pain to stop, as the braces are moving your teeth.

Also when my mouth was very sore, I played on the computer most of the time, it helped keep my mind off of the pain.
Playing any game that you need your brain to think with is a good distraction from the pain game.

Good luck, hope the pain stops soon =D

They will hurt. your teeth are moving.
When I got my braces on I thought my jaw was going to snap it felt so tight. But day after day it eased off a little.
Try to avoid chewing, yawning and cold items (the metal wire... some react to temp change)
Its a long process that does involve some pain. If it becomes too mush to handle, go back to the ortho doc and tell them... maybe an adjustment can be made. If you are in pain tell them. Its your mouth and smile.

im surprised that your dentist didnt prescribe you some pain killers.. when i got my braces in two weeks ago.. i got prescribed some hydrocodone.. but take some advil. i used it and it works good for me. if not call your dentist and see if they can prescribe you some pain killers.. just be careful of what you eat to keep it from hurting anymore. good luck.

Try to gargle with some warm salt water. It will taste nasty but it sometimes can help relieve the pain. It will pass. When I first got mine I couldn't eat for a week, and everytime I got them tightened at first it was the same thing...

If you are brushing your teeth the way they showed you and cleaning under your wires, you should be good to not floss until you feel comfortable flossing.

i know that braces suck. but all you have to do is just get enough sleep and eat food that doesn't require you to chew. just go to sleep.
