They shouldn't. It's not the school's responsibility to provide children with cr*p. They are only obligated to give them a nutritious meal to get them through the day. They can get junk food at home.

Why should they be? When I was in high school, the only vending machines were a juice box machine, and a Pepsi machine. However, only jrs and srs with a grade point over a B- could drink them during school hours. And no food was allowed other than what was served in the lunchroom at noon which had to be eaten in the lunchroom. A candybar or gum was contraband which would get you detention. I lived through it. I can't even begin to fathom being able to have snacks in school.

personally, i think they should be allowed but...
pros to having them.
1. it can give students extra needed energy
2. its quick and if the student knows they wont be able to eat for hours its good
3. it makes money
cons
1. sugar in foods/unhealthy
2. parents fued over what their child is eating
3. uncontrolled
now honestly, al schools are now pulling this no/low sugar/healthy foods thing for lunches. thats already controlling...give us a break. if a kid wants to eat something, theyll bring it to school instead of buying it. and if they arent allowed to bring it by the school , theyll just sneak it and and keep it in their lockers, etc. at least with the vending machines the school can make some money. our school has vending machines but is turned off during certain parts of the day, like lunch, and the soda in the machines are all diet.and heres a perfect example, i dont like diet soda so i bring my own for lunch. and there are days when i stay after school unplanned and i know i wont have access to food for hours and i just want a snack to hold me over.yes, the food can be unhealthy sometimes, but kids eat unhealthy all the time. and if you dontlet your child buy the food out of the machines at schoo. they probably have a friend who will share with them. and yes, it is uncontrolled but its not as if a student is going to eat their whole breakfast, lunch, and dinner out of an school vending machine. plus some of the food isnt all that bad for you, such a fruit gummies that juice companies produce.

Vending machines should be back in schools.
They should be put them in the nutrition class. Anybody using them should be required to know what they are eating. They should have choices. If they choose to eat healthy food or junk food is their choice; then schools job is done.
The schools job is to educate; not treat students as inmates. If they make the less than ideal choice, does that represent the failure of the student to implement what they have learned, or the failure of the educational system to teach effectively?

Schools make money off of them and it allows them to offer better books, staff etc. The only reason they have them is to make extra money. Its purely profit driven. If your kid is fat don't give them money so they can't buy junk food. Parents need some control and need to stop blaming vending machines and McDonalds for fat kids.

If kids want candy, and their parents give them money for such an endeavor, let them eat.
Who is the school board to say what kids can and cannot eat? Its not like the machines are a cost to the school; in fact, they make money off of them.
Stop with all this paternal bullying.

Personally my kids school has one and I wish they didn't. When I was in the same school years ago we weren't even allowed to bring pop to school in our lunch we brought from home. Now they have pop they can get during lunch, before and after school. Some teachers let them even have it in class. The snack machine is filled with candy and chips of all kinds. I personally limit that kind of stuff at my home and when the school is letting them have it, it just kind of rules against me. Then they complain kids are not eating right and are hyper at school. They have their selves to blame for that in my opinion.

First...we'll take away vending machines...then we'll give each child properly measured amounts of food that they don't like...then we'll chain them to their desks...then we'll turn them into zombies that aren't allowed to think for themselves. With Mcdonalds getting rid of trans fat foods...I am starting to get angry...if I want to fill my body full of cr*p...let me.
