No. You can't just stop caring, however you can let them make their own decisions for there life and let them learn the hard way. Everyone has to live their own life and make their decisions, the only thing you can do is be there when they need a friend. Let them know you will always be there for them, and leave it at that.

Of course you care. That's what makes you human. The trick is to not dwell on it. You obviously know that you have no power here. So, when you start to fret about it, you have to make a decision to stop. Go do something that will keep you busy. Do it every time. It'll get easier. And you'll get a lot done.

What is the saying?
"The Serenity Prayer
God grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathways to peace; Taking, as He did this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him.
Forever in the next.
Amen
-Reinhold Niebuhr "
Working in the Fire/EMS field has helped me to understand that you can't help someone that won't help themselves. Sometimes, just being there for someone is the best help you can offer.

Your friend was telling you the truth, they have to figure it out on their own. All you can do is be their friend and be supportive if they do indeed end up making a mistake.

If you are trying to stop caring, you obviously do not care that much. My friends that I have known for years I would never stop caring about.
They have made bad decisions and other things to disappoint me but I would never stop caring about them.

well kno matter what you cant change your feelings about that person. but you can always give them your advice and they migh listen but then agian they might not. but dont punish your self for the person. just tell the person how you feel and tell them where you will be when they decide to change.

you could explain to them that what they're doing is wrong. it would be up to the person to actually listen to you about your advice. remain friends. it's difficult to remain friends after you've told truth to them, in the long run, with patience, it'll work out.

If you care about them, then tell them how you are feeling...
Tell them that they are making bad decisions...thats what friends do...
Good luck...
