the total time taken for the earth to revolve around the sun is 365 & 1/4th days. for convenience, it is counted as 365. in order to make up for the lost quarter of a day, 1 day is added every 4th year. hence a leap year.

The orbit of the Earth around the Sun is not exactly 365 days - it is 365 and 1/4 days - so every fourth year we add a day so that our seasons stay in alignment with our calendar.

It actually takes the earth 365.25 (ish) days to go around the sun. After four years of counting the year at 365, we're a day behind and need to catch up.
