Hi there. I have tight hamstrings. Every morning when I walk from my car in the parking lot to my first class (about a quarter or a half of a mile) my lower legs (from knee down) become stiff and ache. It feels as though my legs are taking over my ability to walk, and I have to sit on a bench to let them rest for a few minutes. Then I continue on. However, once I get to my first class to let them rest, I can go the rest of the day with no problem. My legs don't ache in the evenings. With all of this happening, I decided to perform some hamstring stretches in the evenings once I arrive at my home. Well, this morning, my legs felt even WORSE! Any thoughts or comments about my problem? Do you think it could be a condition other than tight hamstrings?

I thank you in advance!

Your hamstrings are in the back of your thigh, not in your calves. My best guess would be something dietary, like not getting enough potassium or magnesium in your diet. Don't pass up on the exercise though. It certainly can't hurt.

It doesn't sound like a hamstring issue. It may be a shin or calf issue. Is there tenderness in your shins at all? If so, it may be shin splints, or stress fractures. Try some calf/shin stretches in the morning before leaving for class. Try rubbing them down or massaging the sore or tender areas. Alternating heat and ice can help if it is muscle inflammation, or if there's swelling in the joints or bones. If the problems persist, consult a doctor. Hope this helps!!

I don't think it's your hamstrings which are located on the back of the upper part of your leg. It could be a form of tendinitis. I would go see your Dr. so he can put you on some medication and have you do stretches or physical therapy. If it is tendinitis it is usually caused from overuse and not knowing if you exercise or not, but not stretching or warming up enough can cause it.It does not go away without treatment so go see your Dr.
