There are a lot of things...but here are the 2 main reasons

1. Coastal erosion from the waves and salt water of the Gulf of Mexico

2. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (mostly rita because of the marshy wetland area that it hit, where katrina hit more residential areas) The hurricanes were a major devastation because the amount of wetlands that are usually lost in a matter of a few years were lost in a matter of a few hours
