The Ninevites were very wicked.

The Sign of Jonah as it relates to New Testament prophecy: Jesus said

Luk 11:29 As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, "This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and {yet} no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah.

Luk 11:30 "For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

This sign is symbolic of Jesus dying and being resurrected from the dead after 3 days. Jonah died in the belly of the fish, when he was spewed up on the shore, God raised him from the dead.
