Dogs are really a reflection of their owner. Believe it or not, dogs are very smart and usually a feeling from the owner that the dog is 'not smart' means that the owner is not well trained enough to work with the dog. Rather than blaming the dog, you should look at your own failures in training and look to get more information on being a better trainer. I haven't met a dog yet who's training problem was more than a leash length away.

C'mon, give him/her a break. Different breeds of dogs excel in different areas. Have you tried reading a book about training terriers? Most terriers, while actually pretty smart, might seem dumb to some folks as they require a different training methodology than that indicated for other breeds. Check a good bookstore or a pet shop. Avoid the little, thin hardcover book entitled 'Know your Rat Terrier" or some such. Those are much too general. Get a good book about training terriers instead. Expecting a terrier to act like a retriever would be counter-productive. A truism: "There is no dog that cannot be trained. Such cannot be said about their owners".

Train him as much as you can to keep him out of trouble, love him a lot and catch some of his "dumb" actions on tape. You might get a chance to win lots of $$$.

LOL.

Some dogs aren't always the brightest bulb in the box. I have two girls and the English Setter is the one that I always shake my head at. "What in the world would posses you to stick you head in that?" I can't tell you how much vasaline I've gone through getting her head unstuck from places LOL

Good Luck

it probably just doesnt WANT to be smart. i have one dog thats like that. she passes all her trainning classes, but she just refused to listen if food wasnt involved. no matter what we did, nothing worked. she's 15 years old and just never learned anything, i mean she knows sit and lay down, but wont do them if she isnt going to get a treat. but she knows how to open cabnit doors and knows if we go in the fridge or get food out of cabnits. she just chose what she wanted to be smart about. so we just eventually learned to outsmart her. like if we have company over, she wont stop barking or jumping up for food, so eventually we get tired of the way shes acting and just put her in the car. she'll just go to sleep! we had to start doing that when we had repairmen over because they thought she was really mean and going to attack, even tho she's just noise and has never even growled at anyone in her life.

If you are truly disturbed by this, I would recommend you find the dog a new home where it can be loved. Just like with children - you don't always get to pick them by intelligence. Also - don't cast aspersions on your dog's intelligence when you can't spell terrier and knob and don't start your sentences with capital letters or use proper punctuation.
