I believe that the Holy Spirit is what enables us to discern the things of God. I think we receive Him when we first become believers. I think that is why His word says it will seem as foolishness to those that don't know the Lord.

Yes.

"For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness, and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus." (Romans 2:14-16)

"And that slave who knew his master's will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, shall receive many lashes, but the one who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few. And from everyone who has been given much shall much be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more. (Luke 12:47-48)

Your question has a decidely Christian perspective slant to it. ("unsaved") Do you imply then that Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Taoists, etc etc etc cannot discern the things of God merely because they don't buy into your narrow focus on religion?

Oh, btw, my answer to your original question would be: YES

Proverbs 2:1-9
My son, if you will receive my sayings and treasure up my own commandments with yourself, so as to pay attention to wisdom with your ear, that you may incline your heart to discernment; if, moreover, you call out for understanding itself and you give forth your voice for discernment itself, if you keep seeking for it as for silver, and as for hid treasures you keep searching for it, in that case you will understand the fear of Jehovah, and you will find the very knowledge of God. For Jehovah himself gives wisdom; out of his mouth there are knowledge and discernment. And for the upright ones he will treasure up practical wisdom; for those walking in integrity he is a shield, by observing the paths of judgment, and he will guard the very way of his loyal ones. In that case you will understand righteousness and judgment and uprightness, the entire course of what is good.

Why not?!

Romans9:21 says: "hath not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make the one vessel to honour, and the one to dishonour?"

I think it is refering to believers and nonbelievers here. God has the power to make them both so why wouldn't you sense things of God?

Yes, I am living proof of that. Although I was without religion for 55 years of my life, I was finally won over by God's grace, and became a Catholic at 56. I love every second of being a Catholic.

YES !!

We are not born saved but must put forth our hand and partake of the tree of life.

Adam and Eve, they ate (assimilated or consumed knowledge) from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Satan).

That's why God said;

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

We all must eat (assimilate or consume knowledge) of the tree of life (Jesus Christ), to live for ever.

on some level... no... we have free will but it is tainted and limited by our fallen nature and we need grace

Jesus said things like..
"no man comes to me except the Father draws him"
"the flesh prophets nothing"

on some level the cross is not a crutch... its more like a stretcher to lift us to God and give us life,
then we can wake up n smell the coffee... so to speak
