To make Quicktime your default media player on Windows, you will need to set the default file types that you want Quicktime to play. In other words, when you open specific media files, they will automatically open with Quicktime. The file types have to be chosen individually because there are certain types that Quicktime cannot play.

To set your default file types in Quicktime, do the following:

1. Open Quicktime.
2. Go to Edit on the menu.
3. Scroll down to Preferences and then choose Quicktime Preferences from the dropdown menu.
4. Click on the File Types tab in the window that appears.
5. Under the File types, there will be different file types that are categorized with an option box that you can activate or deactivate.
6. Click on the plus symbol to the left of Video. In the dropdown that appears, put a check for Video for Windows (AVI).
7. Click on the plus symbol across MPEG - MPEG system, video and audio files. In the dropdown that appears, put a check for MPEG media.
8. Click on the Apply button and then click on OK.

Quicktime will now be the default media player for Windows AVI files and MPEG files.

However, if you are trying to play WMV or WMA files, they will still open using Windows Media Player since these are Microsoft media formats that are in direct competition with Apple.

Using Quicktime does not guarantee that your videos will play. If you want a free player that can play almost anything, I would suggest SUPER. It's not the easiest thing to use but it does play almost any file that I have had trouble getting to play on Windows Media Player and WinDVD Gold.

To get through all the blah-blah and download SUPER, click on the link below and go to the bottom of the page. Don't worry, this is completely free:

I hope this helps.

QuickTime as your default player is to use Windows directly. To open Windows Explorer in XP, click on Start -> Program Files -> Accessories, . On the menu, then choose "Tools", and then from Tools choose "Folder Options". Click the tab, "File Types". Find the file formats in question (.mov), and change the default application back to QuickTime. It may be necessary for you to quit your browser application, such as Internet Explorer, and then reopen it before the changed file associations will go into operation. Unfortunately any time you upgrade RealPlayer it will generally repeat this switch, making you go through the entire process again. In summation, the .mov files are the only files that require QuickTime. .mpg, .mp3, and .mp4 files can be viewed with any standards-compatible browser plug-in for those file types.

You can also use the options available via quicktime

open the quicktime player and choose

Menu>Tools>Options>File Types>Select All and Apply
