Windows Vista – necessary to upgrade?
If you have WinXP, and you are thinking about Windows Vista, you will have to check system requirements. I have not seen an advisor for that yet.

In today's paper (Buffalo News, 1/24/07) there was a lengthy article on Windows Vista. The author was of the opinion that it really isn't necessary for the ordinary user and that many XP users will not wait outside the store at midnight to buy it as they did for Win95 years ago.

Vista will add to Windows display deal with viewing photos, playing videos, recording and downloading music, and running the new “memory-gobbling” programs like Office Live. Needs:
800mHz speed, 1gHz better
512mb RAM minimum
20gb to run Vista
60-80gb hard drive

Sorry! No, you do not have sufficient RAM. Windows Vista's minimum requirement for RAM is 1000 MB (1 GB) of RAM. If this is the minimum requirement, you need more than 1 GB for Vista to run to a desirable efficiency.

No, don't try to run Vista.
The minimum requriements for Vista Basic, the 'lowest' level of Vista are below:

Windows Vista Home Basic• 800-megahertz (MHz) 32-bit (x86) processor or 800-MHz 64-bit (x64) processor
• 512 megabytes (MB) of system memory
• DirectX 9-class graphics card
• 32 MB of graphics memory
• 20-gigabyte (GB) hard disk that has 15 GB of free hard disk space
• Internal or external DVD drive
• Internet access capability
• Audio output capability

Double your ram and you can run the home edition of Vista. If you already have WinXp, don't bother as the difference will not be noticeable in performance. If you are running anything else, like WinME (horrible) or Win2k (no longer supported) then you may want to consider the upgrade.
