7 to 8 years is the life expectancy of the average groundhog. Punxsutawney Phil, however, who was first given the job as the world's most famous weather prognosticator, is over 120 years old. Each year he is given a drink of a special elixir which keeps him alive. If you go to Punxsutawney and ask the locals about this - they will tell you that it's the truth. If you say, "Yeah, right. Now tell me for real." They'll smile and say - This IS for REAL!
(He's also a very young looking 120 years old.)

Up to 10 years in captivity and around 6 years in the wild.
Also - there have been several "Phils" - just like Lassie.
