You are correct that it is a good idea. It's the only way to find out if you may enjoy it as a profession. If you do not personally know any dentists, talk to YOUR dentist at your next visit. I have 2 young people per week observe with me who think they may be interested in the profession. It's an honor when a patient of mine asks to shadow me because they have interest in the profession. I feel like it is my duty to be a good example for the next generation and teach as much as I can. If everyone in a position of authority reached down to pulled up the generation just behind them, the world would be a better place. Best of luck with your career choice!

call a local dentist and see if you can shadow him or her.
if you are old enough to work, maybe see if you can get a job doing filing or other office work in a dentist office and make sure you let your boss know you want to become a dentist.

Talk to your dentist, or go to the local dental school and ask if you can be an observer, as you are interested in the profession.

Did you ask the office manager at your dentist's office? I think shadowing would be very disruptive and annoying to the patient.
