There are no simple and straightforward answers to your question. As a rule of thumb though, the further in advance you book, the cheaper your ticket will be. These tickets are much cheaper than full fare, but the downside is that these tickets typically are non-amendable and non-refundable. This means that you will not be able to change flights or cancel your tickets. If you travel on these types of tickets it is highly recommended that you take out travel insurance in case you need to reschedule. There are literally hundreds of fare categories for each class of travel. The cheapest tickets go first, then the next cheapest, and the next, etc... until only full fare tickets are available. If you see a price that you think is reasonable you should book it as soon as possible, as the chance of cheaper tickets being released for that flight are slim to none. Use different flight comparison websites like expedia, kayak, orbitz, etc... If you find a good deal on one of these sites it is often a good idea to check out that particular airlines own website. Sometimes you can find better deals that way, but even if the price is the same, book directly with the airline. That way you don't have to involve a third party in case of any problems. Sometimes midweek flights can be cheaper, other times it can be cheaper to fly on the weekend. Many airlines still offer tickets designed for holidaymakers that requires you to stay away at least one Saturday night, so try to mix and match your travel dates to find the ones that suit you. If you are buying tickets for more than one person it can be a very good idea to buy the tickets separately for the same flights. This is because booking systems book all tickets under the same category. So if you are two people, but only 1 seat is available at a cheaper price, the search engine won't show that result as there aren't enough seats in that category for 2 tickets, leaving you to pay more than what you have to. Some people claim that certain weekdays are better for booking tickets... This may have been true in the past, but these days prices are set a whole year in advance. Once they're sold, they're sold!
