Flowers, a plant, a box of candy, some gourmet coffee - or something similar with the thought that it can be used that evening OR later - at the host/hostesses discretion. If you choose to bring a food item, such as a dessert or an appetizer you really should check with the host/hostess first because they may have already carefully planned what they want to serve. Otherwise you may end up with hurt feelings because what you brought wasn't served.

Speaking from personal experience, my husband and I don't drink and alcohol is not served in our home, we always welcome our guests at the door empty handed as we know most are used to bringing wine. Because I don't arrive without something, I usually appreciate a floral arrangement (what woman doesn't?), a crusty loaf of bread, a beautiful cheesecake or other unusual dessert, an interesting cheese and cracker pairing, or I've also had guests bring gourmet candies. I've not always served those things with the meals or parties those people were attending, though, as I was raised that it was rude to point out and display ones gifts as other guests may not have been so thoughtful.

I hope that you find an appropriate gift to provide.

I would say a nice dessert or maybe a nice loaf of bread. You could even bring flowers that could be used as a centerpiece on the table.

Baked goods, such as Fresh Baked Bread or maybe a pie or cake. Flowers are always a nice touch.

gourmet coffee or candy...don't take a dessert or dish that COULD be served at the dinner...the hostess already has the menu planned and serving pieces ready etc.

I like the bread answer. A good crusty loaf of bread from a local bakery would be a good idea.

BYOB! Someone has to liven the party. Or a nice bottle of wine for those who do drink would be nice.
