If you look at the history behind it - Christianity stole many of its beliefs from pre-existing religions, to make it appeal to a wider range of people. It also persecuted any and all who didn't believe as they did, which meant of course there would be more christians when it meant a violent death if you weren't. Of course, thats not the case now, but hundreds of years of conditioning would have an effect. It also has to do with the fact that it is comforting in this scary world we live in to believe that there is more than this, that there is a better world beyond.

ps: to all of those who say because its true: You don't know that. You believe it, and that's great, but there is NO PROOF that Christianity is true, any more so than any other religion. You saying its popular because its true is like someone saying something is right because "it just is". Not exactly a convincing argument.

Christianity is popular because it speaks to many people. Sadly, it's the same reason many don't like it. I love the idea of fellowship and the brotherhood of man but unfortunately too often the more negative aspects come the fore. Consider the bias and bigotry that is justified by using Christianities tome, the Bible. The message is a good one, peace and love, the practical application however tends to be done by those who cherry pick and thus make it less palatable.

As to its general popularity, consider who is embracing the current version of Christianity then you will understand a) my above statement and b) the reason for its growth.

On another note, Bryan, last I checked Judaism and Paganism pre-date Christianity by several Centuries and in the case of Pagans, Millenia. Just FYI

Christianity is not the largest religion in the world. The Muslim faith is much larger, practiced by many more people. However as with all religions one day it too will fade away. Case in point...the Egyptians and the Greeks had their own gods they worshiped for thousands of years. As fervently as the Christians believe in their god the Greeks believed in Zeus and Aphrodite. The Egyptians had their sun god Ra (not sure of the spelling...my apologies). I personally see no proof anywhere that any deity controls anything or even exists. All any religious people have is faith...that is it! Not one person...I repeat....not one person that claims to be a Christian can prove to me a god exists. I've asked literally hundreds for proof and once you eliminate the Bible, the Quran, religious teachings, and "miracles", they have nothing else. To all the Christians reading this...I can be contacted through this Answers forum...prove I am wrong. I am waiting for your response.

Because it's True. No other God besides Jesus can save you from your sin...ie breaking the Ten Commandments.

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment. Hebrews 9:27

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6

There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. Proverbs 14:12

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matthew 7:13-14

"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" Mark 1:15

Blame the Romans, namely Theodosius and Constantine. After the Roman empire adapted Christianity as the official state religion, wherever the Romans went, so did Christianity. They were also very adept at assimilating other religions, allowing the conquered peoples to retain some of their beliefs.

Christianity is so popular because it is a belief system that makes miracles happen, it is not a philosophy where they read the bible and leave it at that, they follow Gods orders to fix up this planet. Now you have a few fallen angels and I tell you they a few. They will do things that will frazzle the minds of Christians so that we Christians give up. It just doesn't work.

Christianity will be the leaders for ever that is Roman Catholic Christians.

Because they take small children and tell them lies about God and then scare them into believing illogical nonsense with stories of eternal damnation and hell fire.

This keeps the person in a child like state mentally whenever the subject of religion is brought up, so the never question the illogical nature of the lies they have been told about God.

This is unfortunate because this keeps them from ever knowing the real unconditionally loving God.

When you come to a place where you understand what God has done for us through Jesus Christ, and you do repent, and fully give your life to Him, to follow Him, there is an understanding that comes upon you, a spiritual re-birth. Literally. A spiritual re-birth that shows you a different sense of seeing things, there's an understanding you never had before.
Do we know all at that point? No, but we grow.
The only way you can ever "get it" so to speak, is to actually be in it. And the "it " in this case is Jesus Christ.
