1. Travel during the day.
2. If you go to Columbia, you risk your life.
3. Ship your bikes from Panama to Ecuador.
4. Know how to speak Spanish or don't do this... just go to Central America and stay there for awhile.
5. Have a fun and be respectful.

Good luck!

I've been through most Latin American countires on a bicycle. It is NOT dangerous, except for a few patches of highway in Colombia. The not travelling after dark advice is a good idea. The only place that is not all that safe (other than those few guerilla areas of Colombia I referred to above) is the big cities, where you really won't be riding that much in anyway.

I have traveled the route by bus from Arizona to Chile and back but there is an area called the darien gap where there are no roads. You will have to ship your motorbike in Panama to Colombia. Here is a good website to help you.
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ I might suggest a Japanese bike around 600cc I met a number of people on my travels who were doing this. Have a good trip

You might want to check the back issues of American Iron Magazine, as I think they had an article on that.

Personally, I would stay in the states, as I would not want to go through the hassles of another country, bandits, difficulty in getting parts and gasoline, etc. I recommend the mid-west instead.
