This is actually for a friend. His fathers and his name's are the same (ones the 1st the others the 2nd), his father can file online and I think he does. Every time he tries to, though, through turbotax it seems to be go through but in a week or so they say they can't process his 1040 because he's already filed. He's called the IRS and all they say is send in the paper 1040's (and that works).

What the problem is sending in the papers is so much slower and electronic filing is so much easier. Is there a way he can fix this and FINALLY file his taxes online?

It might be TurboTax. The IRS handles identical names all the time, differentiating them by SSN.

Try a different software vendor. If that doesn't work, go to a commercial tax preparation place and see if they can't do better by calling the IRS. These places have dealt with this problem before.

Is the son able to be claimed by the father as a dependant, if so the problem could be that the son is claiming his own exemption, which would kick out the return. Check with the father first, if thats the problem, eliminate the exemption on the son's return would fix it.
If he files a paper return and requests direct deposit that will speed up getting the refund back a bit faster.
