Im not looking for an argument just a simple explanation, when you follow quotes such as the one below. im curious. why would you want to kill non-believers of your religion. Surely every individual has the option to choose for themselves?

Surah 9:5-fight and slay the pagans (or infidels or unbelievers) wherever you find them?"

Well, you have to look at the historical conext of that quote. It is in response of the oppression Muslims faced at the time.

Your verse comes from this:

And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith. But if they cease, God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevails justice and faith in God; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression" (2:190-193).

That means that Muslims should never start a war. However, if the other side starts a war for no reason-- it's better to forgive--and that God knows why forgiveness is the best. But if for some reason the other side persists to fight a war--threatening the women and children--then you should go to them and stop them as much as you can so they don't oppress Muslims.

"Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits--for God loves not transgressors"

Crossing the limits means fighting not the women, children or innocent civilians of a country--because they're innocent. You fight only those who fight you. So in the case of Bin Ladin, it's George Bush not the innocent American civilians!

Hope this helps

Remember..Let there be no compulsion in religion.

Islam is a peaceful religion in many ways beside the quote you have there.i think the quote was meant for people during the prophet time.of course it sounds harsh to kill the non-believers but that was what happened during that time.i mean besides Islam other religion do kill non-believers of the religion.
i can't really explain because i am not that perfect in Islam although that is my religion.but if you really want to know than you will have to ask an imam.he will have the answer.there is more to Islam then the quote above or the terrorism..you have to ask an imam for your answer.

Please don’t try to quote out of context things. Read the whole Surah with detail explanation then put your question in this forum.

This is the message for the Muslim of that era when prophet Muhammad (PBUH) started spreading Islam. A Peace treaty was formed in between disbelievers (of that era) and Muslims. So God asked Muslims IF (please note this word “”IF””) disbelievers break that peace treaty then Muslims are free to punish them BUT (again please note that word “BUT”) if disbelievers full fill that peace treaty and do not violate that treaty then u should also fulfill and that treaty and let them go with out any harm.

Please note the following things
1)1st that surah is for the Muslims of that era and not for this era.
2)2nd even there is a message for today’s Muslim to fulfill all the treaties made with other nations and don’t violate them.
3)Please don’t try to quote out of context things.
4)U simply can’t judge the whole religion by just putting one thing and that is also out of context.
5)God is not asking every Muslim of every era to go and kill any disbelievers. If this is thing order by God then u cannot find any non Muslim in India, Arab countries, Far East countries and in Spain. As Muslims ruled there for over 1000 years. And it was easy for the Muslim rulers to kill disbelieves of these countries.
6)But in fact, in India alone Hindus are in majority. This is the clear indication that Muslims never killed any non believers if they didn’t converted to their religion

Hope u have understand this “SIMPLE EXPLANATION “
And in future try to read the whole thing before putting a question in front of yahoo community.

The full version is as follows.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND TELL ME WHERE IT IS WRONG. !!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Fight in the cause of God those WHO FIGHT YOU, but do not transgress limits; for God loveth not transgressors. (The Noble Quran, 2:190)"

"But if the enemy incline towards peace, do thou (also) incline towards peace, and trust in God: for He is One that heareth and knoweth (all things). (The Noble Quran, 8:61)"

"And if anyone of the idolaters seeketh thy protection (O Muhammad), then protect him so that he may hear the word of God, and afterward convey him to his place of safety. "(The Qur’an 9:6)

"[2:190-192] And fight in the cause of Allah with those WHO FIGHT WITH YOU, and do not exceed the limits, surely Allah does not love those who exceed the limits. And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from where they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah) UNTILL THEY FIGHT WITH YOU in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the reward of the unbelievers. But if they desist, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. And fight with them until there is no persecution, and religion should be only for Allah, but if they desist, then there should be no hostility EXCEPT AGAINST THE OPPRESSORS."

These instructions exactly correspond with the International law. And every nation and every person or set of people has the right to self defence and to defend his/their property.-----as per law of the land.

Dear friend I am afraid, you are absolutely wrong.

Sounds kind of like The Bible

"But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me." Luke 19:27

Really both religions are horribly violent. Too bad they can't switch to a more peaceful religion like Jainism or Buddhism.

why did not you quote the verse DIRECTLY after it?

here it is

[6] And if anyone of the Mushrikûn (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh) seeks your protection then grant him protection so that he may hear the Word of Allâh (the Qur'ân), and then escort him to where he can be secure, that is because they are men who know not.

I think because it negates your points. am I right?

I think I am

Islam can't hold a candle to Christianity, when Jesus returns to get revenge he will burn the followers of Islam in hell.

If memory serves it is. :) But it is like the Bible. If you take the old testament that is pretty violent and the new one is much calmer. I believe that for the Muslims is the same.
