There is a very scared stray dog in my neighborhood. I would love to take her in.. I have put food out for her and she will be across the street and wait for me to go inside my house. Untill she knows that i will not go back outside. She will then eat. But the whole time looking all around her. She is part chow i think.. But she is terrified of any human being. It has been so cold outside below 0 degrees. I feel so bad for her. How can i make her trust me?

Well you can do it that way and risk her getting hurt running loose or use a catch pole and make her realize its okay. If you have a local vet that knows you they may let you borrow one.

However; if she is that scared maybe you should call animal control to pick her up and make sure she isn't going to attack you. Scared dogs attack.!! Plain and simple. I see more fear biters than any aggressive biters.

There isn't a way to make her trust you with out getting close to her, the great step you took however was to feed her.

I know its freezing outside but try sitting on your porch. I don't recommend standing because you look very large and threatening to the dog.

Put the food away from you, for example on the side walk then sit on your porch and wait. If she still resists then there is really nothing. If she doesn't slowly start moving the food closer and closer till you can sit next to it.

When she comes to eat talk to her in a low whismical comforting voice. If you have named her already start calling her the name over and over so she learns it.

I would confer with a dog trainer or behaviorist. They may have some tricks up thier sleeve.

If she is untrusting enough NOT to eat while you're on the porch I'd talk to the ASPCA and have her trapped. If she continues to roam free she runs the risk of being attacked by another stray or animal, being hit by a car or being shot by some idiot.

Once she's trapped she'd be easier to handle even if she's aggressive. If she is aggressive you can talk to an at home trainer to come with you to the shelter and handle her there. Also tips for acclimating her to your house.

Good Luck

I found a shepherd like that, and I line hot dogs from point A, outside, to point B inside, and just her her to follow the food, when she got inside I closed the door behind her. Then I kept talking to her in a soft voice, sitting on the floor, about 2 hours later, she laid her head down in my lap.
Good Luck, persistance will win.

I am so glad you care about this poor stray! Just be persistent. I like the idea about the line of hot dogs. Good luck.

I think you should contact your local animal control office. They are professionals. They are trained and paid to rescue loose animals. The dog may have somehow gotten away from his/her home and have a worried owner looking for it, in which case they would likely check with animal control or spca first.
